Oxford-Brooks University and Oxford

January 8, 2018

Today we took a double-decker bus to Oxford where we visited Oxford-Brooks University. From what I understand, it is to Oxford University sort of like how UW Tacoma is to UW. There we listened to different computer science professors talk about the research they and some of their students are conducting. The topics we were told about were augmented reality, machine learning, and robotics. After the presentations we were taken upstairs to their actual robotics lab where they have a bunch of different training robots and 3D printers, along with a robot they had built, one they were in the process of building, and one that they bought. The one that they bought was called RoboThespian and it was basically an acting robot. There were different icons you could choose on a separate screen and the robot would act out or sing what you chose. For us the robot acted the Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker reveal from Star Wars, the introduction of the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz, a Clint Eastwood standoff scene from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly complete with the whistle, and it sang "The Hills are Alive" from The Sound of Music. We then got to see the university's formula 1 cars.

Once we left Oxford-Brooks we took a bus to Oxford and wandered around there looking at the University. Our visit ended by eating dinner at a pub called The Eagle and Child. This pub is famous for being the place where C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien would meet up and talk about their ideas. I can't even imagine the conversations and debates that happened there!

Today was a good chance to see how technology and computer science is studied in this culture.
